athra: ([OUAT] Perfection)
So, [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers just screamed at me for updating my LJ with not a real update, so I guess I'll do a real one.

Life has been pretty crazy for me. For those of you who don't know, I got fired in December, right before Christmas. I have never been fired before, and it felt pretty shitty, even though I know the company was full of assholes and shady practices and whatnot. I don't even want to get into all that here, cause it's long and convoluted and honestly I'm done being bitter about them and whatever, but it's enough to say that it's better for me to be away from them anyway, what with the lawsuits that are headed their way, but still, you know? No one likes being fired... especially right before Christmas, which was just special.

Despite that, [livejournal.com profile] imthelobster and I went on the vacation we had planned to Vermont, to be with his family for Christmas. It was unseasonably warm up there, which meant not as much snow as I would have hoped for, but it's still gorgeous there. Seriously, everything is just so pretty that it's ridiculous. Also, I want to move away from Orlando so bad, have I mentioned that recently? Anyway, the trip was lovely all around. His family is pretty much awesome. I've met his parents before of course, but it was my first time meeting his extended family, and it was a lot of fun... they're all so welcoming and such too. Basically: his family rocks.

So I was able to find a job relatively quickly after we got back home; I just started last week. It's not ideal, because it's only about 30-32 hours a week, and it's a crazy shift (3am-9am, M-F) BUT it's a job, and I'll take what I can get right now. I'm working at UPS through a temp. agency, but it's a one year contract. It's at one of their factory places or whatever, and basically 3 hours or so of my shift is spent monitoring the machines/people as packages get unloaded from the trucks, looking for different percentages and making sure things work properly etc., and the other 3 hours or so is for doing paperwork relating to that. Honestly, the paperwork doesn't take me 3 hours even now, and I've only done it for 4 days, so that part is stupid easy. I've already been told to bring a book with me to work, hahaha. It's a very easy job in general, but a little difficult physically, what with all the running around, and my knees are just not very good. Hopefully that won't be a problem in the long run though. It will never be a job that I love, but I think I can do it, and do it well, and that's enough for right now.

In other things, I've been reading the Beka Cooper books by Tamora Pierce. SHOCKING REVELATION: I love them. Beka is no Kel, of course, and she's no Alanna either, but the books are super entertaining, and Beka is kickass, and it's awesome to get a look back at Tortall how is was in the past. So much the same, and yet so much different. Tamora Pierce does it wonderfully. I really should read her other world stuff too at some point. When I finish the third Beka book, though, it's on to my re-read of Hunger Games.

SPEAKING OF, I am ridiculously excited for the Hunger Games movie. I hope it's as good as it should be, and as good as it looks like it's going to be, because oh man. I might just flip out from excitement.

Uh, what else. I'm watching lots of TV and such, but I don't have much to say about most of it, cause I get my flails out either with [livejournal.com profile] imthelobster, my mom, or by just scrolling through a ridiculous amount of pages on tumblr.

I've been wanting to get back into the habit of taking a lot of pictures / photography in general, mostly because [livejournal.com profile] imthelobster has this awesome camera and takes gorgeous shots with it, but I've been lazy (story of my life) and haven't actually done anything about it.

Oh, but speaking of his camera and stuff, I don't remember if he posted his Hogwarts posters on LJ or not, but if you haven't seen them, go poke him a lot, because they are freaking beautiful, and I totally want them printed and hanging on my wall, for serious. ♥ ♥

Okay I think I'm done for now.
athra: ([misc] waste of potential)

  • I got put onto an ongoing team at work. \o/ This is very good news for my general job security, and has me feeling better in general, though I'm not officially hired on yet. Still, this makes me happy, as I actually like this job, and you know, not coming home miserable has been a huge plus in my life. Now as long as I do as well with the ongoing calls as I did with the annual enrollment calls, I should be okay.

Unfortunately this doesn't mean that my hours are secure, as evidenced by the fact that I've been sent home early the last two days in a row. I really hope that stops soon, because I need the hours, and don't really want to be forced into having to look elsewhere. But, hopefully that will stop after the holidays, since it's a really slow time of the year for us.

  • Our kitty, Nala, had to go to the vet yesterday. :( There's nothing too terribly wrong with her, as far as we know right now, but she's on an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory. Let me tell you, it is so much fun trying to get her to actually take the medication, too. She jerks around like nobodies business, and made quite the effort at drawing blood from [livejournal.com profile] imthelobster this morning.

  • We're rewatching Stargate right now, and it's making me ridiculously happy. ♥ I've only watched it all the way through the one time, and even though I watched some of the episodes more than once, a lot of them I only saw when I was blasting through the series, and I hardly remember some of them. So it's been great fun :D Especially since a lot of the shows we're watching right now all air on the same night, so having something else to watch during the week is a plus.

  • I've started reading the True Blood books, and I really enjoy them more than I thought I would. I'm in the middle of the fourth one now... in general: I like Sookie most of the time, I find Bill soooo boring, and Eric amuses me a lot. I do intend to start watching the show at some point, too, but I wanted to read the books first, and now I can't decide if I want to read all the ones that have been published so far, or if I just want to start on the series now.

  • Speaking of vampire books that are now TV series, has anyone actually been watching Vampire Diaries? I stopped watching somewhere late in season 1, where it was already so vastly different from the books, but I heard some of the things that happened that just make me O.O Is it good on its own, though? Would it be worth picking back up? I feel like I should be watching it, since I liked the books so much, but after I got behind a few weeks I felt no desire to pick it back up.

  • Last thing: Christmas season is starting up again. As a general note, I don't intend to do much in the way of Christmas gifts this year. If you really want to exchange gifts for one reason or another, let me know, but otherwise I'm not really planning on it.

So, an entry! I got a little behind on posting...

[livejournal.com profile] imthelobster's surgery went well, as most of you already know from either his journal or twitter, but it seemed strange not to mention it. We've been watching a looot of tv since we got back home haha

I finished reading Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch yesterday. cndjcvbjbj I LOVED IT. I don't know why I continue to doubt [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers when it comes to books, because she very, very rarely fails me. I almost wanted to read it over again as soon as I'd finished it, but I figured that might be a little much, so instead I've started Graceling, by Kristin Cashore. By 'started' I mean I read 200 pages last night when I should have been going to bed and then had to physically stop myself from reading more and force myself to go to sleep.

I need some sort of icon from Lies of Locke Lamora. [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers should get on that for me. >.>

I had a bit of a breakthrough in the original novel I'm writing. Now I just need to figure out where I'm going with it... and, again, type it all up. I wish I wasn't doing so much of the writing by hand, because I soooo prefer typing in the first place, but writing at work is way too convenient to pass up. :/

So, happy 2010 guys! I hope everyone had a good New Year. Ours was pretty quiet at home, with a sickly [livejournal.com profile] imthelobster, but we did manage to stay up until midnight, so that was something.

I'm trying to decide if I want to set book and movie goals for 2010. I already have my big writing goal, but my reading has been up and down as of late, so I'd kind of like to have something to strive for. I was thinking like 50 books, but then I think maybe that's too low... opinions?
athra: ([misc] trees are cool)
HOKAY. Since I moped around [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers last night for a few hours, and then did something I'm not at all proud of, and then had to inform [livejournal.com profile] katilara that I have been, to use her term, a grumpig, I decided that I should DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

Hooray for taking your happiness into your own hands. Which is clearly how it should be all the time, but whatever.

SO. In list form, some things that I am happy/excited about, or just proud of:

1. I found really adorable pink sparkly flip-flops for $2.80 at Kohl's. Wasn't even what I was looking for, but, SUCCESS.

2. Speaking of things I wasn't looking for, I also found a really adorable flip-flop wallet. To put in my pink purse that I will wear around with my pink sparkly flip-flops. Sometimes I feel too girly for words, I swear to god.

3. While B&N didn't have the book that I went in looking for (sadface, but I've decided to just order it off of Amazon once I move) I did buy three new books today. YAY RETAIL THERAPY?!

I totally did not buy 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson just because she's Hank and John Green's Secret Sister. Um.

In case anyone is interested, I also bought Sabriel, by Garth Nix and Tithe, by Holly Black. Though when I'll get around to reading these is a secret no one knows! Not even me.

(Quick aside: look for planned rereading and discussing of Harry Potter soon, and [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers and I strongly encourage people to join us. Seriously. It will be much more fun that way! I'm looking at you, flist. More info in a later post, though.)

4. SPEAKING of Hank and John Green, Brotherhood 2.0! I've watched smatterings of episodes before, but a couple days ago I started from the beginning and have been working my way through. Oh. My. God. I love them! LOVE. I've gotten through April and am starting on May after finishing this post. :D

And did you know that John Green's next book is going to be set in Orlando?! YES. So, even though they haven't announced tour dates or anything, that still means that they should end up coming here, right? RIGHT?!

5. I found a bra that
a) fits me
b) wasn't ridiculously expensive
c) isn't the most hideous thing ever.
Yes, this is actually REALLY EXCITING news, because it's surprisingly hard to find a bra that meets all three of these criteria, for me. And I'm not even that big. (And too bad for you if that's TMI. (Also, for those who are wondering, comfort was assumed in 'fits me.'))

6. Even though I wasn't able to go to the wrock show last night, [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers got me a really spectacular signed poster. With a tree drawn on it!! heeee.

7. Today I went grocery shopping, with no prodding at all and no toilet paper emergency. THIS IS IMPRESSIVE. Not only that, but I bought real food. Like, that I have to cook! And I'm making plans to actually cook it! Really simple stuff, of course, but hey. I'm starting small. (On that note, [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers, I may actually be making dinner tonight? WHOA.)

8. I finally said something out loud that I think I've known/have been feeling for quite a while now. I feel good about it, I just have to decide what to do about it, which will be much harder.

9. While [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers and I came to our senses about actually protesting Twilight in the most hilarious way ever, it is still SO MUCH FUN to plan to do it. Yeah, I'm messed up in the head.

10. I want to plan another day to force people to stop being hermits! [livejournal.com profile] katilara, [livejournal.com profile] theemdash, [livejournal.com profile] marilla82, [livejournal.com profile] imthelobster, I'm looking at you! (And at [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers, too, but the jury is still out on whether or not I'll ever convince her to leave her room when there's not a concert or Weather Warden involved. heh.)

Okay, so that got really long, but... I'm going, for once, to refuse to cut it. Because that's a lot of good things in my life, even if some of them seem silly, and it's doing me a lot of good to reminded of it. :)

ETA: OH MY GOD I FORGOT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS!! OLP IS MAKING A NEW CD!!! cndlsvnklsndvlkmnklmNM<LNKJVMNK<VNLV<DVLKMV<DKLMDL:KLNXKJLHJKNKL SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZ!
athra: ([misc] be the change)
So, I decided on a whim to do this, because my lists have been changing on me as of late, sooo there's no reason not to!

Top Ten Lists of... different sorts of things. I'm separating it into 1-5 and 6-10, where 1-5 are definitely my TOP FIVE, and then the other five, but not in any sort of order within those two groups. ORR, it might just be a top five in some cases. WHO KNOWS?!

Hopefully that makes sense, but if it doesn't... oh well, this is for me, anyway. :D

Top Ten Fannish Lists! )

I feel like I'm just outright forgetting certain characters. :(

And those lists kind of make not a lot of sense, BUT I CARE NOT, so there.

Ummm. If you want explanations on any of them, I can do that! Oorrrr, if you want a Top Five of anything else, let me know and that's cool, too, I can do that!

::shuffles awayyy::
athra: ([Speak] eyes/tree)
So, I finally watched Speak. It was everything that [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers said it was and... well... cut for spoilers )

I can't find my copy of the book, though. Which is just... um. Yeah. But I keep saying I want to buy that new cover... fate, I guess, because now I have a reason to. I might even go out for it today.

Just... the book is so powerful to me, and the movie is just... yeah. Really well done.

I want to watch it again with the commentary. I'll have to do that soon.

(btw, Lis, that song that plays during the credits at the end -- do you know what that is? do you have it?)
athra: ([Death Note] sugar)
Okay, this seems like fun...

1. Choose five of your all time favorite books.
2. Take the first sentence of the first chapter and make a list in your journal.
3. Don't reveal the author or the title of the book.
4. Now everyone try and guess.

okay, some of these are not actually favorites because some of my favorites would be ridiculously easy based on the first line [as in, giving character names and such], SO... yeah. But all of these are books that I enjoyed quite a bit, so it's okay:

1. He remembered the wind. -- The Ruins of Ambrai, by Melanie Rawn, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] cleverpoison

2. On the 24th of February, 1815, the watch-tower of Notre-Dame de la Garde signalled the arrival of the three-master Pharaon, from Smyrna, Trieste, and Naples. -- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] fluffymaru

3. It was a nice day. -- Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers after some hinting. XP

4. Ladies and Gentlemen, behold: The Enemy. -- The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers

5. Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. -- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] fluffymaru
athra: (peace [crumblingwalls])
I finished Blood and Gold last night. Ahh, sweet freedom.

It ended better than it began, really, but Marius did not cease to be a whiny bitch. But not in the good way, like Lestat sometimes was. So I don't know. There's only one Vampire novel left that I haven't read, I think... there may be more, I'm not sure, but I know of at least one. But I've always hated Armand, since Interview with the Vampire I've hated him, so reading an entire book about him ... especially when Anne Rice fails in her later writing ... ugh.

But anyway. Yay! I'm done!

[I'm going to read Magic's Promise next, so there, Nicole.]
athra: (reckless [me])
Good Lord, Anne Rice makes me want to die. Still trying to stumble my way through Blood and Gold. I swear I remember liking Marius, but this book makes me want to kick his fucking face in. Shut UP, you whiny BASTARD. guh.
Whatever happened to her beautiful writing, anyway? I am so tempted to throw this book across the room and never touch it again. As it is, I think I need to reread The Vampire Lestat before I lose my faith in the Chronicles. Sigh. They started out so well..

In any case, I've had a really fun weekend. so yay!

I shouldn't do this, because I have a to-be-read list a mile long and quite a few people who will want to shoot me if I don't read Magic's Promise soon, but ... anyone want to rec me some good books? Please?
[Katie, if you try to make me read that shit you read, I'll hurt you. Fair warning. :)]

Okay. I need to finish this chapter of Blood and Gold. Isn't reading supposed to be fun?
athra: (take me sir [Lisa and I])
Book meme.
Bold the ones you've read.

cut so I don't clog flists. )

Yeah. I'm bored.
And this makes ... I think the sixth entry in a row that's public. I am on a fucking role.
