Remus did many things after James and Lily died. He rebuilt himself, in order to survive. It wasn't a happy survival, but it was what he was best at -- struggling ever onwards, even knowing (believing) that he would never be whole or happy ever again.

He worked when he could, he ate when he could, he secluded himself for the full moons and took his every regret and sorrow out on himself.

It was better when he was at Hogwarts; and then suddenly, irrevocably worse. The guilt and pain threatened to overwhelm him, and he existed within his house a man broken once more. Until Sirius came.

Sirius, who was a little darker than before, a little more sullen; Sirius, who was missing a part of himself, but who was still Sirius in his core. He came to Remus like a whirlwind of emotion, a tornado striking right to the heart of him; and Remus knew that he was living again.

Sirius had given him a home to come to.
